Taking Flight

Orange-fronted Parakeet
The orange-fronted parakeet, also known as the Kākāriki Karaka, is a pretty little green bird with a lemon yellow crown and orange frontal band above the eyes. They enjoy eating flowers, buds, inverebrates (caterpillars and scale insects) and seeds. These cute birds can be found in beech forests.

  1. Hi Hannah

I can honestly say that I have never heard of this Orange-fronted Parakeet. I also see that it is critically endangered with only a really small number of them left.
I really like the bird of the year vote that they run each year, as I think that this really does raise awareness of our native birds and the challenges that some of them are facing.
It is a really lovely colourful birds and is such a shame that we can't see more of these types of pretty birds in the wild. Imagine if we could see lots of these flying around each day! That would be incredible.
I voted in the bird of the year this year. I voted for the Tui. I really love this bird and think it is one of our best birds. I love it when the kowhai comes into flower and you see the Tuis up close and personal as they feed off the beautiful yellow flowers.

Well done with this activity. I hope that you are enjoying your holidays. Not long to go now!

    Until next time

    Allie :)
