Flax weaving looks really fun and interesting, and I've never tried it before. It's not really something I would take on as a hobby, but it does look like something I'd like to try out one day. I've seen people do it before but it looks really hard and I don't think I'd be able to sit through it.
Greetings Hannah,
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your honesty, I don't think I would take it on as a full time hobby either but it does look fun and interesting, I agree, so I'm glad to hear that you would give it a go! Weaving definitely takes a lot of time, patience and practice but it can be a very rewarding experience.
Did you know that back in the day Māori could make baskets (kete) within a few minutes? You would have to be quite skilled to be able to work that fast. Flax weaving was very convenient for them because they could make a kete wherever and whenever they needed since flax is so widespread in New Zealand. Have you ever used a kete woven from flax before? They're super strong and make very good grocery bags, especially now that supermarkets and shops are encouraging you to bring your own bag.
Best,
Evelyn :)
